Her Carry Spotlight: Kori
Welcome to the first Her Carry Spotlight!
For our first feature, I'm introducing you to Kori. She is a veteran, former MP and CID agent, investigator, single mom, business owner, and dedicated volunteer.
Kori is also the social media manager and a board member for Equine Valor Project (EVP), our Carry It Forward organization for August. I had the opportunity to sit down with her to talk about confidence, community, finding purpose after military service, and what it means to be a woman who does a lot.
If you're in the Savannah area, I highly recommend checking out EVP and learning more about the work they're doing for veterans and first responders.
Sarah: I’m very excited to have you as my first interview for the Her Carry Spotlight!
Kori: Of course!
Sarah: So can you tell me a bit about your background?
Kori: I was in the Army for almost 11 years. I was a MP and a CID agent during that time. After getting out in 2023, I became a defense investigator where I now work for Trial Defense Service. I’m also a single mom, just got my masters, and I serve on the worship team at church.
Sarah: And you’re also social media manager for Equine Valor Project, a board member, and a volunteer.
Kori: (Laughs)
Sarah: You’re a busy lady.
Kori: Mhm. (Laughs)
Sarah: As far as EVP goes, can you give us some information on the program itself?
Kori: So EVP is an equine therapy program designed for veterans and first responders who suffer from various mental health issues. The program is designed as a 6 week class for veterans and first responders to connect and bond with horses as a way to alleviate symptoms along with other veterans and first responders and their families.
Sarah: What drew you to EVP and how did you get involved?
Kori: I found out about EVP in 2025 through a peer specialist who I met at the VA. When I was introduced to the program, I thought it was a great mission and I wanted to support it as much as I possibly could. I was in the first class of EVP and after that jumped both feet in to becoming a board member and social media manager.
Sarah: So Kori, you’re a veteran. How has EVP impacted your personal life?
Kori: For EVP, it has given me a community of veterans and just other people who understand the history and background of what I’ve been through. So it’s just a common place where people can regulate on a regular basis and just support one another which is great.
Sarah: Do you have any other recommendations for veterans or first responders, people dealing with trauma, people who are relearning life after they leave the military? Any suggestions that you’ve picked up?
Kori: I think my biggest thing is finding a community of people who you feel like are your people. The more you can find that community that can support you, and also find your purpose, and just being able to help others is the best way you can support your mental health.
Sarah: What can all of us learn from horses?
Kori: So the energy horses give off can help regulate us. That’s the biggest aspect of it. Even when you’re just standing near a horse, it’ll actually help regulate your heart rhythm and calm you down.
Sarah: Wow. I didn’t know that.
Kori: Yeah. That’s the magical part of it. And the other part of it, it gives you a purpose. There’s so much going on with taking care of a horse. Having to feed them, to groom them, take care of where they’re living, all gives a lot of purpose to the things that you’re doing.
Sarah: That’s really interesting. I had no idea.
Sarah: At Her Carry, we are all about empowering women and helping women feel safe in their own person. What makes you feel empowered in your life?
Kori: Lifting really really heavy (laughs). Being a good mom. And being in service to others.
Sarah: On the topic of lifting really really heavy, I know you are also starting a business! Can you tell me a bit about [Sovrin Coaching]?
Kori: Yeah. So through my own journey of weight loss and fitness, I have been through all the extreme restrictive and unhealthy ways to manage my weight. Things that I wish I had known early on, I want other women to know in order to maintain their fitness and manage a healthy weight. So that is the idea behind Sovrin Coaching, is to help women manage a healthy body weight and stay fit in a sustainable way.
Sarah: Do you have any recommendations for young girls who are just figuring out their lives?
Kori: Find the right community. Find those good influences in your life. And trust your instincts.
Sarah: I love trust your instincts. I wish I’d known that earlier.
Kori: Mhm. I wish I’d listened earlier.
Sarah: Any final words for us about EVP, about life as a female veteran, anything else?
Kori: Just that women are strong and capable, and really can do incredible things.
Sarah: Absolutely! Thank you so much, Kori!
Kori: No problem!
